Freiburg is a bustling, historic town that boasts an international student population and broad cultural influences and curiosities. Situated at the border of France and Switzerland, it is known as the sunniest spot in all of Germany, which, along with its reputation for exceptional cuisine, helps account for its popularity as a destination for students, tourists, and artists.

The beauty of Freiburg speaks for itself. In addition to the markets full of fresh produce, the small shops and overflowing sidewalk cafes, the area has something for committed hikers and daydreaming flâneurs alike.

Student guides will lead optional outings into the city and the Black Forest (literally within walking distance from the university). Outdoor activities include hiking, biking, swimming, and the city has several museums, cinemas, theaters, music venues, and numerous cafes.
Group outings to the theater, to dance performances and concerts will be organized by the Program Directors. A reading series in conjunction with the Carl-Schurz Haus will take place during the Black Forest Writing Seminars.
